Interview with Brett (Kong) Wood the artist for Marshal Tyme in Adam Zero issue #2. Brett can also be found at his blog.

Q. So what is your art background?

My art background... hmmm. Well I started drawing as a
little kid at grandma's house and my uncle was and
still is and amazing painter. I kinda loved to doodle
all the time but eventually went to Ohio State and
took some art classes. I then realized I needed to
transfer to an art college and ended up transferring
to the Columbus College of Art and Design. At CCAD I
got into a class on comics taught by Daryl Banks of
Green Lantern fame and since then I've been pursuing
getting into comics.

Q. Who are some of your art influences (comics or
otherwise)?

Obviously Daryl Banks was a big influence. He really
let us into his method of creating comics. In the
class was a guy named Keron Grant who is in the
industry. He's worked on Fantastic Four and Iron Man.
His stuff was inspiring to say the least. I've always
been influenced by that classical style of drawing
that you see in Roman sculpture and Greek sculpture.
Also I loved Albert Duhrer.

Q. And how did you and Marc start working on Marshal
Tyme?

Well I think I read a post of his looking for an artist
for his story. So I asked if I could read the story
and after reading it, well it really was a no brainer
for me. I mean the Wild West and Dinosaurs? As well as
time travel. I thought what a freaking cool fun
script. I was enamored at how fun and creative the
subject matter was. It's the whole reason I love
comics as a story telling medium! I'm not the guy who
wants to read about Peter Parker for 40 years ya
know... Not that Spidey doesn't rock but their's so
much more than the typical super hero comic.

Q. What about the characters in Marshal Tyme did you
most enjoy illustrating?

I enjoyed drawing the dinosaurs really. I don't think
I ever drew one before and haven't since but that was
alot of fun. Particularly when Marshall Tyme was being
attacked by the T-rex's. Drawing that was a blast.

Q. So Dinosaurs in the old west what did you think of
that?

Obviously I thought it was brilliant. The funny thing
is I showed the pages to a friend of mine whose not
into comics and the first thing he said was, "
Dinosaurs in the wild west.. sweet!".

Q. Are you planning on doing anymore Marshal Tyme
stories?

I don't have any on the horizon but possibly down the
road you never know.

Q. And what's this we hear about a Adam Zero issue
featuring Gorillas?

This is a cool idea me and Marc kinda bounced off of
each other with him doing most of the tough work story
wise. I basically said wouldn't it be cool if this and
if that happened to Adam Zero and before I knew it he
had a script. So now it's just waiting for me to dig
in. Hopefully I'll start on that very soon.

Q. I understand your working with Matt Spatola on a
character called Vigil, cared to tell us about it?

Vigil is kinda Matt's take on Superman. And we did a
short comic that Matt wrote on the character having to
deal with the responsibilities it takes to decide what
Vigil should do with his time. I mean when he's saving
the day here something bad is happening there and that
is concept that you'd have to struggle with being a
guy like Vigil or Superman and having to judge which
disaster or villian to stop if a few things are
happening simultaneously. Matt's a great writer.

Q. And you've also done work on Matt's hero Venger
correct?

Yea I've done alot of Venger work. I just finished up
the long overdue Venger/Footpath crossover called
ENDGAME. I took like a 3 month break from doing the
first 20 pages to finishing the last 12 pages so the
art really is interesting to see the progress in my
work because all of the sudden on page 22 it almost
looks like a different artist did the pages and in
some sense it's true.

Q. So what else are you working on now?

I've been working on a few possible stories that I may
do on my own as well as a space horror story me and
Marc kinda came up with. Besides that I just need to
continue to draw. Working a regular job full time can
really hamper my drive to continue to do comics but I
think all indy creators have that monkey on their back
don't they.

Q. Are you reading any comics now?

I haven't been reading any comics lately. Last ones I
read were some of the Conan trade paperbacks by
Busiek. They were great and Cary Nord is an amazing
artist. Lately I've just been reading a ton of
biographies and books like that.

Q. So what character would you most like to illustrate
and why?

That's a good question. If I could pick probably one
who I'd most like to illustrate it'd probably be
Indiana Jones. Is there and Indiana Jones comic? If
their isn't there should be right!

Quick hits?

Marvel or DC?

DC, I just gravitated towards DC's heroes more than
Marvel for some reason although in the 70's Powerman
and Iron Fist were my favorite.

Invisible Woman or Wonder Woman?

Wonder Woman... I mean did you see the show in the
70's she was hot!

Who's stronger Superman or Hulk?

Hulk is pure strength... gotta go with the Hulk. It's
a shame the Hulk movie sucked so bad.

Star Wars or Star Trek?

I'm gonna go with the classic Star Trek mainly because
the Star Wars prequels kinda hurt the legacy of Star
Wars I think. Don't get me wrong all the computer
graphics were amazing but actors acting against a
green screen to me comes across as shallow acting
compared to the classic Star Wars when the actors were
immersed in the sets and could really get into the
environment.

Batman or Spider-Man?

20 years ago I would've said Spiderman 10 years ago
Batman but I'd say today it's a tie.

Aliens or Alien?

Aliens.

Kirby Surfer or Mobius Surfer?

Kirby. I mean it's Kirby.
