Interview with Andy Poole the colorist of issue 1 and 2 of Adam Zero. Q. What is your art background? I’ve always had an interest in art and its practical uses, painting, illustration, film and photography are arts that I have practiced at one point in my life, but my constant focus has always been on writing. After seeing some colorists like Danimation and Morry Hollowell, I decided to take that side of comic creation up too. Q. Who are some of your art influences (comics or otherwise)? My influences in the comic industry would have to be, Mark Millar for his fantastic writing, Danimation (Iron and the Maiden) and Morry Hollowell (Marvel Civil War) for their coloring skills as well as Liquidology (The Ultimates 3). Also, Shirow Masamune (Ghost in the Shell) and Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira), both amazing Manga artists. Outside the comic world; J.R.R Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), Eric Lustbader (Nicholas Linear Novels) and Kenji Kamiyama (writer/director Ghost in the Shell: SAC). Q. And how did you start working on Adam Zero. I was approached by the writer, Marc, to do colors over at Digital Webbing. I was new to the comic scene and needed all of the experience I could. Adam Zero seemed like a solid idea and I was happy to jump on board. Q. What about the characters in Adam Zero did you most enjoy working on? Probably Kitana, like most sci-fi fans I’m a sucker for an alien chick in leather. I enjoyed how she ended up looking the most. Q. Which character would you consider your favorite in the Adam Zero universe and why? Creed. He seems to be the typical space pirate/bounty hunter archetype, muscles and guns are his thing; but there’s a cool story behind him that makes him stand out, especially in Fletcher’s Adam Zero universe. I hope that there may be some work to flesh him out more in the future. Q. The colors in the climactic battle scenes give off and almost claustrophobic feel how did you help accomplish this? Submarine movies; those red lights on a hunted boat, they always screamed “OH CRAP!” It seemed to be the best choice for the big fight on Adam’s ship, the classic red alert. It also allowed for great contrast when a weapon discharged or some other light source was introduced onto the disabled ship. Q. You also worked on the forthcoming second issue, how would you compare the villains from the two issues? I think Creed was less of a villain, and more of a bad guy doing a bad guys job; hunting for money. The second issue of Adam Zero introduces a real evil piece of work, the man who has made it his life to tamper with and destroy life itself. Issue two’s villain is far worse. Q. What are you currently working on? I am currently writing two series of comics, which I would like to get off the ground soon; as well as a few one shots. I am also producing some pages for the “Roninfinity” Sci-Fi Anthology for Ronin Studios; a story called Leper Messiah (drawn by Keith O’Malley). Other than those, just general coloring work for those who need me. Q. Are you reading any comics now? If so which ones? I’ve been enjoying the Ultimate Marvel books for a while now, and I’ve taken a liking to Invincible by Robert Kirkman. Naruto by Kishimoto is a pleasant read and Berserk by Kentaro Miura is just awesome. Q. Do you plan on doing more Adam Zero issues? Yes. Quick hits Marvel or DC? Marvel Star Wars or Star Trek? Wars. Spider-Man or Batman? I love Batman, but Spidey takes it. Aliens or Alien? Aliens. Kirby surfer or Mobius Surfer? Kirby. All images and characters copyright Marc J Fletcher.
