Interview with Issue #1 artist Christian Andrews. To see more of Christian's work you can visit him at the following sites. Q. So what is your art background? I have a BFA in both Art and Design from Missouri State. My chosen areas of emphasis were in Drawing and Illustration, respectively. Q. Who are some of your art influences (comics or otherwise)? Neal Adams, Frank Frazetta, Dave Johnson, Adam Hughes, Ashley Wood, Joshua Middleton, Drew Struzan, Ben Templesmith--and there are many more. Q. And how did you and Marc start working on Adam Zero. I was initially looking for a horror story to illustrate. I posted a thread at the Ronin boards, I believe, and Marc showed me his script. It was the most interesting idea I had seen. There is a lot of depth in the world of Adam Zero. Each character has an interesting story. There are some really fascinating secrets yet to be revealed. First, I did some character designs of Adam and other main characters including Kitana and Creed. Then, I designed the two main ships. I showed them to Marc. He approved, and then I started drawing the book. Q. What about the characters in Adam Zero did you most enjoy illustrating? I really like the contrast between Adam and Creed. Adam is this tough former soldier. He has this powerful firearm (future version of a six-gun), his warship, and his wits. I drew him with a classic space adventure look in mind. He's straight-forward but all business. Creed, on the other hand, is a walking arsenal. He has weapons and devices hidden everywhere, and he puts them to good use. His gear is cutting edge. He uses all sorts of tricky, unfair devices to catch his prey. Their ships also mirror their personalities. Creed's ship seems like a living monster. Adam's ship is a powerful warship with big guns mounted on either side. Q. The cover of the comic is rather unique and much commented on, where did you get the idea? And what else may have influenced it? Marc was looking for a classic look, and he showed me some classic Marvel covers that he liked for inspiration. I also looked at some sci-fi movie posters like Flash Gordon among others. I came up with a design that was inspired by these, and I gradually fleshed it out. Everything was drawn in pencil, with the exception of the space background which I painted digitally. I colorized the drawing in Photoshop and added effects. I'm pretty happy with it. Q. What are you currently working on? Marc and I are planning a new project. Q. Are you reading any comics now? If so which ones? My budget is pretty tight, so I keep a very small pull-list. Right now, I read Buffy Season 8 and Astonishing X-Men. Q. Do you plan on doing more Adam Zero issues? There is a strong possibility. Quick Hits Marvel or DC? It's a big cop-out, but I like both. Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars. Batman or Superman? Batman Aliens or Alien? Aliens Kirby surfer or Mobius Surfer? Kirby All images and characters copyright Marc J Fletcher.
